I created this print by carving away the negative space of my lino block to shape my image. After printing the first layer of color, I carved more away off my lino block and printed the next layer. By the end of the process my lino block was destroyed and I can never reprint this design. Printed one at a time on recycled paper with eco-friendly oil based inks. The whole process of sketching, carving, and printing Calavera took me three months to complete.

A celebration of life in memory of a friend that passed away, Calavera features a quetzal bird in one eye and a pyramid in the other. A crescent moon on the forehead and a sun on the chin symbolize the cycles of birth and death. Cempasuchil (marigold flowers) remind us that we are alive right now and life is full of beauty and color, and we should enjoy it!
